Rose Colors and How Many to Send: What Each Choice Can Say

What each rose color traditionally means, why the sources disagree, and how to pick a stem count without relying on a single meaning.

Counted roses or a loose rose design

Classic Roses specify counts; Pastel Reverie tiers describe fullness without a numbered rose bundle.

Rose colors and stem counts to compare: Classic Roses come in seven colors and in one, two or three dozen stems. Pastel Reverie Bouquet mixes pink roses and white spray roses with lavender carnations and larkspur. Compare the selected color and count before ordering. Compare this group.

Rose color is the part of a rose gift people most often try to decode. The honest answer is that the meanings come from Victorian flower language and from florist guides, and those sources do not fully agree. Use color as a message you can explain in the card, not as a code the recipient has to know.

What the traditional chart says

The Old Farmer’s Almanac chart, updated September 2026, lists these rose meanings. It says the chart reflects mainly Victorian flower language, and that meanings vary among sources.

Color Meaning in the chart
Red Love
Pink Grace, happiness, gentleness
White Purity, innocence, reverence, a new beginning
Yellow Jealousy, infidelity
Orange Desire and enthusiasm
Lavender Love at first sight
Coral Friendship, modesty, sympathy
Deep, dark crimson Mourning

Yellow is the color to think about. In the Victorian list, yellow roses meant a decrease of love and jealousy. Modern guides more often read yellow as friendship and happiness. Both readings appear in the sources, so choose yellow for the person in front of you rather than for the chart.

The deepest crimson is the other exception. The chart links it with mourning, which matters if you are choosing a very dark red for a celebration.

What people actually choose

A 2022 poll for the Society of American Florists found that red was the most-chosen rose color, at 65% of responses, followed by pink at 40% and white at 36%. Multiple answers were allowed. That shows what people buy, not what the flower means.

Red, pink, white and the colors between

Red is the common choice because it reads clearly. If the person likes red, or the moment is romantic, you do not need a color chart to say so:

“Red for the way you still make me laugh, and the way you still make me a little nervous. Happy anniversary.”

Pink suits a gentler message, such as gratitude or a quiet thank-you. White fits a fresh start, such as a new home or a new chapter. Lavender is the color the chart ties to love at first sight.

Classic Roses come in seven colors: red, pink, white, yellow, lavender, orange and raspberry hot pink. Raspberry is a bold pink with no separate entry in the sources we checked, so choose it for the look.

How many roses to send

Florist guides assign meanings to stem counts, such as a dozen or a larger number for a bigger statement. These guides are mostly written by florists who sell flowers, and they do not agree with one another. Treat the count as a size decision first.

Classic Roses come in one dozen, two dozen or three dozen stems. Choose the count you can comfortably afford, and let the card say what the moment means to you. A card that names the reason will say more than a number a recipient may not have heard of.

If you prefer a soft pink rose design over a stated count, compare Pastel Reverie Bouquet, which mixes pink roses and white spray roses with lavender accents. Its arrangement tiers describe fullness, not numbered bundles of roses.

When the color or count is essential

The photo shows one arrangement. The color you select changes the flowers, and the selected count changes the number of stems. If the color matters, confirm it on the product page before ordering. The note for the florist field can ask for a color, but it is a request, not a guarantee of an exact arrangement.

Questions about rose colors and counts

What does a red rose mean?

The Almanac chart lists red roses as love, and red was the most-chosen rose color in the 2022 Society of American Florists poll. Red is the classic choice when you want the message to be plain.

Do yellow roses mean jealousy?

In the Victorian chart, yes. Yellow roses meant jealousy and a decrease of love. Modern guides more often read yellow as friendship and happiness, so yellow suits a friend well. For a romantic gift, make the card clear.

How many roses should I send?

There is no agreed standard. Pick the count you can afford, and use the card to say what the gift means to you.
